Job Description Summary
MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina that provides healthcare to patients within the rural health network throughout the state of South Carolina.
Under general supervision of a pathologist, the Pathologists’ Assistant, independently examines, prepares, describes, and dissects various surgical specimens from the simple to the highly complex Entity MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) Worker Type Employee Worker Sub-Type Regular Cost Center CC005163 MCP - Tidelands Pathology Pay Rate Type Salary Pay Grade Health-31 Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 Work Shift Job Description Under general supervision of a pathologist, the Pathologists’ Assistant, independently examines, prepares, describes, and dissects various surgical specimens from the simple to the highly complex.
The Pathologists’ Assistant aids in the supervision and training of grossing technicians in dissection procedures and techniques.
Responsibilities include prioritizing workflow, examination, and dissection of routine to highly complex neoplastic cases, submission of tissue for histological analysis, procurement of tissue for ancillary studies, summarizing and dictating medical histories and gross findings, assuring appropriate specimen accessioning, photographing specimens, and performing frozen sections for pathologists’ interpretation.
The Pathologists’ Assistant assists with the operational management of grossing activities, writing and updating policies and procedures, quality and safety initiatives, interdisciplinary meetings, tumor boards, and adheres to all quality, safety, compliance, regulatory, and accreditation standards Examine, describe and gross specimens submitted to Anatomic Pathology Sections specimens according to established procedures.
Photomicrographs areas of interest to be included in the medical record.
Performs quality control checks during all grossing activities.
Preserves and processes gross specimens and sets up documentation of full spectrum of surgical specimens.
Organizes slides, data, generating tables, and assists with special requests.
Submits the correct portion of specimens for histologic preparation and/or tumor procurement for ancillary studies and tumor banking.
Performs specimen log-in and assigns accession numbers.
Completes tissue examination forms.
Ensures accuracy of requisitions, specimen type, container identification, and test requests.
Labels specimen cassettes with accession numbers per protocol.
Performs accurate gross description and dissection of full spectrum of surgical specimens.
Prioritizes and triages full spectrum of specimens accurately.
Handles, stores, and disposes of full spectrum of specimens appropriately.
Ensures tissue specimen practices comply with regulatory guidelines and requirements.
Oversees cleaning and maintenance of grossing stations and grossing equipment.
Maintains grossing stations’ inventory of supplies and reagents.
Actively participates in quality, process improvement and educational activities.
Performs all quality activities per policy and regulatory guidelines.
Assists pathologists, adjunct pathologists and remote pathologists with quality assurance audits and other quality metrics as requested.
Assists in the identification and investigation of discrepant cases to determine the origin of variances.
Evaluates policies and procedures; implement changes based on evidence-based practice.
Initiates and participates in departmental based performance improvement activities by evaluating systems, identifying opportunities for improvement, offering solutions, implementing plans as directed, and following up for outcomes.
Oversees daily workflow in grossing area.
Trains and educates care team members (grossing techs, residents, fellows) to support the educational mission of MUSC Health.
Maintains certification and meets CME requirements.
Problem solves and performs work related tasks in a responsible and efficient manner.
Complies with all departmental and institutional policies including those governing attendance and HIPPA legislation.
Complies with policies mandated by accrediting agencies; adheres to all procedures and established turnaround times; observes all safety regulations and precautions.
Performs other duties as deemed necessary by leadership.
Works as a team with department members and other Medical Center employees.
Maintains a clean and organized workspace.
Refers problems to leadership as appropriate.
Requirements (Education, Work Experience, Licensure, Registry and/or Certifications): Master’s degree from an accredited NAACLS Pathologists’ Assistant program and Board of registry certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathology PA(ASCP).
A minimum of three to five years relevant work experience and PA educational program development experience preferred.
