POSITION PURPOSE: Responsible for planning and supporting the school-wide literacy program and for providing research information and support to teachers.
The Literacy Coach supports critical thinking in reading, writing, listening, and speaking across the content areas, and works directly with adults to support the implementation of the Reading and ELA program in the elementary and middle school classrooms.
This teacher leader, provides feedback to teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning and models and demonstrates best practice in the classroom.
The coach collaborates with teachers and provides on the job professional development as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Models and demonstrates effective classroom practices for teachers.
Observes and provides feedback to teachers in classroom literacy practices.
Works directly with teachers to ensure effective literacy practices are incorporated in all lessons.
Provides research-based information and support to literacy teachers.
Attends the district designed professional development for literacy coaches.
Conducts weekly/monthly meetings to update teachers in current literacy research and practices.
Coordinates and analyzes student assessment data with reading teachers, including formative assessments, MAP, PSAT and supports teachers in the use of these data to guide instruction and interventions.
Coordinates intervention and support programs for students reading below grade level.
Collaborates with teachers as an advisor/mentor to support them in their roles in the school’s literacy program.
Lead parent and community meetings/programs in support of the literacy program.
Organizes and facilitates the school literacy plan.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Chief Instructional Services Officer, Superintendent or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a valid South Carolina Professional teaching certificate or be able to obtain one within 60 days from being hired.
Must be Highly Qualified in the content area or be able to become Highly Qualified within 60 days from being hired.
Master's degree in Elementary/Middle School or Reading/ELA preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EXPERIENCE: Must have completed a program of study in education from an accredited college or university.
Three to five years experience as a reading/ELA teacher or elementary grade level teacher.
